Myths About Rhinoplasty – What You Really Need to Know

Rhinoplasty is one of the most transformative and precise operations in facial surgery. Yet despite its popularity, many misconceptions still surround the procedure. As a Consultant ENT and Rhinology Surgeon in Portsmouth and Fareham, I frequently meet patients who are anxious because of things they’ve “heard” online or from friends. Here are some of the most common rhinoplasty myths and the truth behind them.

Myth 1: “You’ll need nasal packing after surgery.”

Absolutely not. Modern rhinoplasty no longer relies on uncomfortable nasal packing. In my practice, I never use it. Instead, I use dissolvable stitches to support the septum and keep airways open. This means patients can breathe through their nose immediately after surgery, with far less discomfort during recovery.

Myth 2: “Expect significant bruising and swelling.”

With traditional rhinoplasty techniques, bruising could last weeks but not anymore. I use piezo ultrasonic technology to reshape nasal bones with remarkable precision, minimising trauma to surrounding tissues. Combined with dorsal preservation techniques, which maintain the natural nasal bridge, this dramatically reduces swelling and bruising. Most of my patients look presentable and comfortable within 7–10 days.

Myth 3: “You’ll be bed bound for weeks.”

Recovery from rhinoplasty shouldn’t keep you in bed. In fact, I encourage gentle movement and normal light activity as soon as possible. Most patients take around seven days off work and simply “take it easy” for the first two weeks, avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or wearing glasses.

Myth 4: “Septorhinoplasty is just cosmetic.”

While septorhinoplasty can refine appearance, its main purpose is functional. Many patients struggle with nasal blockage or breathing issues due to septal deviation, valve collapse, or previous injury. A functional septorhinoplasty improves both airflow and shape, ensuring the nose looks natural and works well.

Myth 5: “All rhinoplasties look the same.”

Every nose and face are unique, and rhinoplasty should reflect that. I take time to analyse facial proportions, nasal structure, and patient goals. The aim is always balance and harmony, not an artificial or “operated” look. The best results are the ones that look completely natural.

Myth 6: “It’s a very painful operation.”

Most patients describe postoperative discomfort as mild pressure or congestion rather than pain. With modern anaesthesia, meticulous technique, and minimal tissue trauma, recovery is usually far easier than expected.

The Modern Rhinoplasty Experience

Today’s rhinoplasty is precise, gentle, and highly individualised. Thanks to innovations like piezo ultrasonic instruments and dorsal preservation, downtime is shorter and results more natural than ever before.
