Recent changes to NHS funding policies by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB) have left many patients suffering from nasal obstruction worried about their treatment options. Since September 2025, surgeries such as septoplasty, turbinoplasty, and septorhinoplasty have been classified as “not normally funded” by the NHS. This decision directly impacts individuals who depend on these procedures for relief, creating uncertainty for thousands of patients in the region.

What Does “Not Normally Funded” Mean?

The phrase “not normally funded” can be misleading. It doesn't mean that surgeries are completely off the table. Instead, it signals that funding may only be awarded only under incredibly strict conditions. As of yet, I have never had an IFR accepted for funding for nasal obstruction surgery.

What Are the Options?

Facing these new funding restrictions, patients have a couple of avenues to explore:

Continue on the NHS Pathway

If you have exceptional circumstances, unique to all other patients and likely to benefit from surgery more than all other patients, you may still be eligable for an IFR application. This route involves a detailed individual application and the likelihood of success is very slim.

Private Consultation and Treatment

Alternatively, some patients may choose to seek private care. This option allows for quicker access to treatment and a more manageable approach to symptoms, free from the wait for NHS approval. I offer transparent pricing. Patients can choose a one-time consultation or follow a complete treatment plan that suits their needs. Many private patients find they can schedule procedures within mere weeks rather than months-years, which significantly improves their quality of life.

Please see my website for further details on procedure costs - see Septorhinoplasty as opposed to Rhinoplasty.

Reassurance for Patients

I recognise that changes in funding can be alarming, especially for those wrestling with nasal blockage. Our dedicated team is here to help you navigate through your options and make the best decision, whether that is pursuing treatment within the NHS or opting for private care.
