How to Book a Private ENT, Nasal Surgery or Rhinoplasty Consultation with Mr Tim Biggs

Patients often ask which clinic they should contact for nasal blockage, sinus problems, septoplasty, septorhinoplasty or rhinoplasty.
I currently see private patients at three locations in Hampshire:

The best clinic depends primarily on what problem you would like assessed and whether you are self-funding or using private medical insurance.
If you are self-funding, you can usually book directly without a GP referral.
If you are using private medical insurance, your insurer may require a GP referral and pre-authorisation before your appointment.

Medicana Winchester Hospital
Medicana is suitable for patients whose main concern is:
nasal blockage;
deviated nasal septum;
septoplasty;
turbinate enlargement;
turbinate reduction;
sinus problems;
recurrent sinusitis;
nasal polyps;
facial pressure;
smell disturbance;
nasal endoscopy;
CT sinus assessment;
functional nasal surgery; or
general ENT problems.
I see both self-pay and insured patients at Medicana.
Patients who are initially assessed for a functional nasal problem at Medicana may subsequently require septorhinoplasty rather than septoplasty alone. Where appropriate, rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty surgery is then undertaken at Adnova Clinic.

Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, Chandler’s Ford

Do I need a GP referral?
Self-pay patients
In most cases, no GP referral is required.
You can contact the relevant secretary directly.
This applies to:
self-pay rhinoplasty consultation at Adnova;
self-pay ENT consultation at Medicana;
self-pay ENT consultation at Nuffield Wessex.
Privately insured patients
Your insurer may require:
a GP referral;
a membership or policy number;
an authorisation code; and
confirmation that I am recognised by your insurer for the proposed consultation or treatment.
It is best to check this with your insurance company before booking.
Both Medicana and Nuffield Wessex are used for insured ENT and nasal consultations. Your precise cover depends on your policy and insurer.
Which clinic should I use for rhinoplasty?
For self-pay cosmetic rhinoplasty, septorhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, book directly with Adnova Clinic.
Adnova is where I undertake my private rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty surgery.
Patients may occasionally first see me at Medicana or Nuffield Wessex because their principal complaint is nasal obstruction or because they are using insurance.
If assessment shows that a septorhinoplasty rather than a simple septoplasty is required, this can then be discussed in more detail.

Which clinic should I use for nasal blockage?
If your main problem is difficulty breathing through your nose, Medicana Winchester or Nuffield Health Wessex are usually the most appropriate starting points.
Causes of nasal blockage can include:
septal deviation;
turbinate enlargement;
rhinitis;
nasal valve narrowing;
nasal valve collapse;
nasal polyps;
chronic rhinosinusitis;
previous nasal trauma; or
previous nasal surgery.
The purpose of the first consultation is to determine why your nose is blocked, rather than assuming that septoplasty is automatically required.
You may need nasal endoscopy or imaging depending on your symptoms and examination.

Which clinic should I use for sinus problems?
For sinus symptoms, book at:
Medicana Winchester, or
Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital.
Symptoms that may warrant assessment include:
recurrent sinus infections;
persistent blocked nose;
nasal discharge;
reduced sense of smell;
facial pressure;
nasal polyps;
symptoms despite nasal steroid treatment; or
abnormal sinus CT findings.

Yes.
Nuffield Health Wessex lists direct booking for appointments, and patients can also book through my private secretary Michele Hewlett.

What happens at my first appointment?
The exact consultation depends on the reason for attending.
A typical appointment may include:
detailed discussion of your symptoms or concerns;
medical history;
previous nasal surgery or trauma;
examination of the external nose;
examination of the septum and turbinates;
assessment of nasal airflow;
dynamic nasal valve assessment;
nasal endoscopy where clinically indicated;
review of existing CT imaging;
discussion of diagnosis;
treatment options;
whether surgery is appropriate; and
expected recovery and costs.
For rhinoplasty patients, we also discuss:
aesthetic goals;
profile and frontal appearance;
dorsal shape;
nasal tip;
facial proportions;
breathing;
structural support;
likely surgical techniques; and
realistic limitations.
Will I need nasal endoscopy?
Not every patient needs nasal endoscopy.
It may be helpful when assessing:
persistent nasal obstruction;
sinus symptoms;
nasal polyps;
bleeding;
previous sinus surgery;
nasal valve or septal problems; or
symptoms not fully explained by examination of the front of the nose.
At Nuffield Health Wessex, self-pay flexible nasendoscopy is charged separately by the hospital.
If endoscopy is likely to be useful, this can be explained during your consultation.
Can I have a second opinion?
Yes.
I regularly see patients seeking a second opinion for:
persistent nasal obstruction;
failed septoplasty;
persistent sinus symptoms;
nasal valve collapse;
previous rhinoplasty;
previous septorhinoplasty; or
uncertainty about whether further surgery is appropriate.
For routine second opinions following rhinoplasty, I generally recommend waiting until at least 12 months after the previous rhinoplasty, because swelling and scar tissue continue to evolve for a long period.
Do you see privately insured patients?
Yes.
I see privately insured ENT, nasal and sinus patients at Medicana Winchester and Nuffield Health Wessex.
The exact requirements depend on your insurer.
Your insurer may ask for:
GP referral;

hospital location;
procedure code;
membership number; or

Yes.
Both Medicana and Nuffield Wessex can be used for self-pay ENT, nasal and sinus consultations.
For cosmetic rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, the main self-pay pathway is Adnova Clinic.
Are the three clinics close to Southampton and Portsmouth?
Yes.
The clinics provide coverage across much of Hampshire and the South Coast.
