Functional Septorhinoplasty – Breathe Better

Many people think of rhinoplasty purely as a cosmetic procedure, but for many patients, the primary goal is to breathe better. A functional septorhinoplasty is a specialised operation that improves both the function and appearance of the nose. At my Fareham clinic, run out of the Adnova Clinic, I perform this surgery to help patients restore clear nasal airflow while maintaining (or enhancing) balance.

What Is Functional Septorhinoplasty?

A functional septorhinoplasty combines two elements:

  1. Septoplasty – straightening the nasal septum, the central partition that can block airflow when deviated.

  2. Rhinoplasty – reshaping the external nose to support the airway and achieve facial harmony.

However, it is not a cosmetic procedure. It will straighten the nose and open up the nostrils, to help restore nasal function. The cost is lower than a cosmetic rhinoplasty, as its a more directed procedure to improve nasal breathing.

While a standard septoplasty focuses only on the inside of the nose, functional septorhinoplasty addresses both internal structure and external shape. This dual approach allows me to correct nasal obstruction caused by septal deviation, valve collapse, trauma, or previous surgery — all while improving nasal aesthetics.

Who Might Benefit?

Patients who may benefit include those with:

  • Chronic nasal blockage or difficulty breathing through the nose

  • Snoring or sleep disturbance related to nasal obstruction

  • Nasal valve collapse or weakened sidewalls

  • A crooked or twisted nose following injury

  • Minor aesthetic concerns (mainly deviation) alongside breathing issues

Functional septorhinoplasty is tailored to each patient’s anatomy and goals. Many patients are surprised at how significantly their breathing and quality of life improve after surgery.

How the Surgery Works

During surgery, I reshape and reposition the nasal framework to restore internal support.

Techniques may include cartilage grafting, spreader grafts, and structural reconstruction to reinforce the nasal valves. I frequently use piezo ultrasonic instruments for precise bone modification, reducing bruising and swelling.

Whenever possible, I employ dorsal preservation techniques, maintaining the natural nasal bridge and achieving a more refined, long-lasting result. My goal is always to create a nose that looks natural and functions efficiently.

Recovery and Results

All patients return home the same day. Initial swelling settles within two weeks, though subtle refinement continues for several months. Breathing improvement is often noticeable within days. With careful surgical planning and postoperative care, results are stable and enduring.

I never use internal nasal packs, so you will be able to breath immediately upon waking.

Why Choose Mr Tim Biggs, Consultant ENT and Rhinology Surgeon

As a Consultant ENT Surgeon based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, and Adnova Clinic, Fareham, I specialise exclusively in nasal and sinus surgery. Having completed advanced fellowship training in rhinology and facial plastic surgery, I introduced both dorsal preservation and piezo rhinoplasty to my NHS practice. I am passionate about combining functional improvement with natural, balanced aesthetics.
