Deviated Septum and Crooked Nose (One Operation, Two Solutions)

A deviated septum and a crooked nose often go hand-in-hand. What many patients don’t realise is that both problems usually come from the same underlying cause, a twisted or displaced internal framework. The good news is that both can be corrected together in a single operation: a functional septorhinoplasty.

At Adnova Clinic in Fareham, near Portsmouth and Winchester, I perform advanced functional septorhinoplasty using Piezo ultrasonic and dorsal preservation techniques to improve both breathing and appearance in one procedure.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

The septum is the internal wall that divides your nose into two passages. When this wall bends or twists, from injury, growth, or previous surgery, it can block one or both sides of the nose, leading to:

  • Chronic nasal obstruction

  • Snoring or mouth breathing

  • Recurrent sinus infections

  • Poor airflow during exercise

A septoplasty straightens the septum internally, but it doesn’t correct the shape of the external nose. That’s where functional septorhinoplasty comes in.

The Crooked Nose – External Deviation

When the nose looks visibly crooked, it’s usually because the same forces that bent the septum also shifted the nasal bones or cartilage. A purely internal septoplasty can’t fix this external deviation, the nose may still look uneven, even if breathing improves slightly.

Functional septorhinoplasty addresses both the internal (septum) and external (nasal framework) components together, restoring balance, symmetry, and stability.

One Operation – Two Solutions

A functional septorhinoplasty combines:

  • Septoplasty – straightening the internal septum.

  • Rhinoplasty – correcting the external shape and alignment, whilst acknowledging that the main focus is restoring nasal breathing, this procedure is not cosmetic.

The result: a straighter, better-functioning nose.

By operating through the same approach, we can precisely realign the cartilage and bones that form the nasal structure. Using Piezo ultrasonic instruments, bone reshaping is smooth and accurate, avoiding trauma, bruising, and the need for “breaking” bones.

This modern technique allows for a faster, more comfortable recovery with less swelling and more predictable long-term results.

What to Expect

  • No nasal packing – you can breathe through your nose straight away

  • Small external splint removed after one week

  • Return to work in around 7–10 days

  • Visible improvement in both breathing and appearance within weeks

At Adnova Clinic, every operation is consultant-delivered, using advanced preservation techniques for natural results that maintain the character of your face.

Summary

If you have a crooked nose and blocked breathing, you likely don’t need two operations, a functional septorhinoplasty can solve both problems at once.
