Rhinoplasty Scars: What to Expect (and Why They’re Almost Invisible)

One of the most common questions patients ask before rhinoplasty is:
“Will I have a visible scar?”
The reassuring answer is no — in most cases, rhinoplasty scars are minimal to invisible. As a Consultant ENT and Rhinology Surgeon based in Portsmouth and Fareham, I perform both open and closed rhinoplasty using delicate, modern techniques designed to achieve beautiful results with virtually no visible marks.
Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty
There are two main approaches to rhinoplasty:
Closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty: all incisions are made inside the nostrils, meaning no external scars at all. This technique is suitable for subtle reshaping, refinement of the nasal bridge, or very limited tip work.
Open rhinoplasty: involves a small incision across the columella, the soft tissue bridge between the nostrils. This incision connects the internal cuts, allowing full visibility of the nasal framework. The scar typically heals as a fine, pale line, almost invisible within weeks.
In both approaches, stitches are tiny, dissolvable, and placed with precision.
Why the Scar Is Hardly Noticeable
The skin on the underside of the nose heals exceptionally well due to its excellent blood supply. When the incision is carefully positioned along natural creases, the resulting line blends seamlessly with the surrounding skin. After healing, most patients, and even close family, cannot see it without close inspection.
In fact, many of my patients forget where the incision was made.
Modern Techniques, Minimal Scarring
Advances in rhinoplasty, especially the use of piezo ultrasonic instruments and dorsal preservation techniques, have made surgery more precise and less traumatic than ever before. With less swelling, less bruising, and reduced tension on the skin, the incision heals faster and more smoothly.
In my practice, I use fine microsurgical instruments, magnification, and gentle tissue handling to ensure every detail contributes to a refined, natural result.
How to Care for the Incision
Good aftercare helps optimise healing:
Keep the area clean and avoid touching it unnecessarily.
Apply any recommended ointment or silicone gel as directed.
Protect your nose from direct sun for the first few months, as UV exposure can darken fresh scars.
Avoid heavy glasses or pressure on the nasal bridge until cleared.
These small steps help the incision fade beautifully and ensure your result looks as natural as possible.

The Bigger Picture
Rhinoplasty is about far more than a tiny scar, it’s about balance, breathing, and confidence. Whether performed for aesthetic refinement or functional improvement, modern rhinoplasty aims to achieve harmony between form and function.
If you’re considering rhinoplasty in Portsmouth, Fareham, or Hampshire, I’d be happy to discuss your goals and recommend the most suitable technique.
